Leray Heyne 2:09
Welcome back to Jesus Christ's CEOs TV, I am Leray Heyne and we are at the National Religious Broadcasters convention and exhibit in Nashville, Tennessee, where we are launching our new virtual reality studios. And we have been looking for people that we could talk to and share with you what Jesus is doing in business. That is our mandate of Jesus Christ's CEOs TV is telling the world what Jesus is doing in business. And our team discovered a lady who is doing just that she is what Jesus is doing a business. And I want to introduce you to Katie. Katie thank you for sitting down with me and sharing a little bit about your story.
Katie Hornor 2:46
It's my pleasure. And thank you for having me.
Leray Heyne 2:48
Yeah. So tell us a little bit about you and our audience. So give us some background.
Katie Hornor 2:53
So my husband and I have been missionaries in Mexico for 17 years. And through a couple of ministry changes, the Lord led us to start a business to support ourselves and sort of become tentmakers. And through a course of events, that business now provides more ministry than we ever dreamed of. And about five years ago, we were actually able to email our supporters and say, You know what, God is taking care of us through business. And if you've got other places that money can be served better than send that on to them. And we get to now Empower Christian entrepreneurs, to be able to grow their business to the point that they can support God's ministries, and still have profit and quality of life and their business.
Leray Heyne 3:31
Wow. So what was the business that you and your husband started? What did the Lord lead you to do?
Katie Hornor 3:37
Our first business was actually in the Spanish language. I have a master's in education. And we realized there was a lack of homeschool materials in Spanish.
Leray Heyne 3:46
Oh, wow.
Katie Hornor 3:46
So we created the first literature based homeschool curriculum that existed in the Spanish world. And we also hosted the first online training summits for Spanish speaking home educators.
Leray Heyne 3:56
Wow.
Katie Hornor 3:57
And we ran that pioneered that movement for about 10 years. And then when COVID hit, and publishers went out of business, and shipping got more expensive and slow down, and lots of different things, we shut down the physical side of that business, and continued to grow our our coaching business for Christian entrepreneurs.
Katie Hornor 4:14
No, good, good. And so now that your coaching business for entrepreneurs that is now what is sustaining you, that allowed you to tell your daughters go invest in some other kingdom things, right. That is awesome. And so tell us a little bit about the coaching business and what you guys are doing now.
Katie Hornor 4:34
Of course, so our business is called The Flamingo Advantage. And folks, I was like, what does that have to do with business? But I we took our family on a river trip to see flamingos in the wild in Mexico where we were and the Lord use that to give me so many analogies and metaphors that apply to the Christian and business that I started using them in my teaching and that became a book and that it became another book. And now we talk about your Flamingo advantage being the way that God created you very special and unique to show up in the world and serve, to grow the kingdom and do what God puts you here to do. And a lot of our Christians, they feel like a secular work is less than
Leray Heyne 5:12
Yeah.
Katie Hornor 5:12
And you know, maybe because I'm not full time ministry, I'm I'm less than or, you know, with us, we used to be full time ministry, and now we're not and so that like the expeditionary idea, right. But I believe that if you do exactly what God has created you to do in wherever that is that he's placed you that is your best worship, that is a sacred calling.
Leray Heyne 5:34
Well, you know, you know, the definition of ministry is this service to the Lord.
Katie Hornor 5:38
Exactly.
Leray Heyne 5:39
So why is not business if God has called you gifted you and sent you to oversee a business. And it's his business, why is that not service under him?
Katie Hornor 5:48
It is, it is service to Him. And we've had more opportunities for ministry through our business than we ever had with a local ministering.
Leray Heyne 5:56
Yeah. So I'm fascinated I'm sure our audience you know, the average CEO is not thinking about flamingos in their business. So give us give us two examples of something that you would teach in using flamingos as a business metaphor.
Katie Hornor 6:14
Sure. So a lot of my Christian entrepreneurs come in with a lack of confidence. And I don't know if I'm worth this much money, I don't know how much to charge should I be giving it away? Because I'm a Christian. Those kinds of, of mindset and, and really biblical misunderstandings of truth, right. And, you know, when we went to visit the flamingos in the wild, those will make us we're not bothered by the tourist in the river. And they weren't bothered by the crocodiles in the river. And they just stood there and did what God created them to do, regardless of what was going on around them. And as a Christian in a secular marketplace, we don't need to fear competition, we don't need to fear danger. We don't need to fear that we look silly being pink in the middle of a blue and green atmosphere. We just need to boldly stand there and do what God created us to do.
Leray Heyne 6:14
Wow. Wow, I love it. I love it. Okay, you got my interest. Now I'm ready to hear the next one.
Katie Hornor 7:06
So the other one that that we hear often is like, oh, there's lots of people doing that. I don't know if I should do that, or is there too much competition. And when I started studying flamingos, I learned that every Flamingo has their own unique voice.
Leray Heyne 7:20
So everyone one talks a little different?
Katie Hornor 7:24
Everyone has their own tonality. And I've actually experienced this I went to the flamingo gardens in Sarasota, Florida. I'm about to talk to flamingos up here a bit.
Leray Heyne 7:32
Was that your business research?
Katie Hornor 7:33
Yeah, business mistakes. But every one everyone has their own distinct tonality in how in how their voice sounds just like your voice and my voice is different. You and John 10, Christ said, My sheep hear my voice. And I know them and they follow Me. Flamingos have their own voice. And that's how they recognize each other in the flock, and from one flock to the next. And when you are in the marketplace, there's going to be people who are looking for your voice. They're listening for you. They're not going to resonate with all the other birds out there. They're listening for your voice, and you're going to be able to speak to them and to help them in a way that no one else can. And if you don't, they may not get help.
Leray Heyne 8:10
Wow, wow. Well, I'm fascinated. I don't know about you guys. But I've never heard a story about flamingos being translated to equip business owners biblically. So you learn something new every day. So how do people get ? Well, first, let's tell people how to get a hold of you. And then I want to drill down a little bit. You said you have a couple books. So we'll talk about those in a minute. So how do people get ahold of you?
Katie Hornor 8:36
Theflamingoadvantage.com is our home for all the things.
Leray Heyne 8:39
Theflamingoadvantage.com. That's awesome. Okay, so tell us a bit a little bit about the books because that's part of the curriculum and things.
Katie Hornor 8:47
Exactly our workshops and our online training and membership is called business with God. And the first book we wrote was called faith like flamingos, the Christian business guide to walking out your faith in bold color.
Leray Heyne 9:00
Wow.
Katie Hornor 9:00
And so we use that it's a devotional. So you could of course buy it on it on its own on Amazon or on our website. But that devotional is one of the texts that we use, along with a workbook that we've written to go through a very systematic training of what does God say about himself? And what does that mean for a business owner? And what does it mean about making money and what is your purpose in the secular marketplace? We give you a good foundation in God's world through that business with God training, and then we can bring you into a membership with with ongoing marketing training and business strategy coaching and things like that. So that was book number one and I wasn't the flamingo advantage brand back then. But that Flamingo book took a life of its own. Everyone started referring to me as the flamingo lady. I started getting Flamingo gifts in the mail people would tag me on social media with Flamingo photos and and it just I just was like Lord, if that's what you want to do, like we'll go with it. Pink is not my favorite color even. Um, but we just ran with that. And so the next book, of course, had to be the flamingo advantage. And this one is geared a little bit more towards marketing. Okay. And a lot. It does have one section that deals with the myths we believe about business and the truth from God's Word that corrects that.
Leray Heyne 10:16
Awesome, awesome. And so you guys still live in Mexico, right where you were missionaries. And so
Katie Hornor 10:21
We do we have a historic home down there we are homeschooling our five children just graduated our first child.
Leray Heyne 10:27
Wow.
Katie Hornor 10:27
So we lived there most of the year. And then we traveled back and forth to the states as necessary to speak and minister.
Leray Heyne 10:33
What amazing testimony and and you are what you and your husband are what Jesus is doing in business under flamingo advantage. And yeah, well, thank you so much. Tell him again, how they get a hold of you.
Katie Hornor 10:47
